the mating rituals of land bound mammals
By Dave Kerksieck

you razor-wired your wrists to mine
we jumped up and down like we had won
a brand new car or a washer/dryer combo
bled like it was that time of the month
stuttered fleeting mating calls
sure as hell and twice as hot
danced a slow dance like we were melting
chewed our tongues and talked with our mouths open
built a wall out of pond scum
chlorophyll chains of algae
shuddered as the water slunk to earth
and primordial insects shivered in and out
over the barrier we screeched
